Situated on the East Coast Main Line 24 miles north of London Kings Cross
Railway type and traffic
Woolmer Green is where the ECML changes back (or to) four tracks from two after the Welwyn viaduct and tunnels. The traffic is mainly express and suburban passenger workings. There is a small amount of freight but most of this is patched via the Hertford loop.
Environment
A quiet Hertfordshire village.
Road directions
From the A1(M) northbound:-
Turn off at junction 6
Take the second exit from the motorway slipway roundabout
About 100 yards there is a roundabout. Take the second exit (third road)
From the A1(1) southbound:-
At the slipway roundabout take the second exit (right turn) and follow the road round to the next roundabout.; Take the second exit (almost straight on)
Common Directions
Carry on to the next roundabout (The Clock Hotel). Here take the third exit (right turn) and follow the road for about 1 - 1 1/2 miles (watch out there are two speed cameras in the 40mph section).
Once you have gone over the crest of the hill you will drive over the bridge.
Just after the cottages there is a left turn (Heath Road) park here.

Parking
For the location it is recommended that you park in Heath Road. There is a road opposite the location but this is a private driveway.
Amenities
There is a petrol station in the village with a shop, as well as a nice Thai takeaway.

One of the over bridges give a good view of northbound trains, although there is overhead line equipment in the way. And the other gives a fair view of southbound trains.

This is the view from the main London Road bridge. This angle only favours northbound workings.

From the road bridge, facing north this time. You have this option for southbound trains

Looking back towards the location in fig 1 and 2 this location works for northbound workings.
Looking south towards the Heath Road bridge
From the edge of the farmers field you can see the trains break through the bridge, this is also the point where the ECML splits from/to two to four tracks.
Looking south towards the Heath Road bridge - opposite side
From a mound at the end of the parking area in the Heath Road housing estate. There is an embankment which you can go up for this view, this is also the point where the ECML splits from/to two to four tracks.
