We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
This location is on the Syston to Peterborough line.
It is surrounded by trees and bushes, the village of Frisby is clearly visible from this spot. The nearest town is Melton Mowbray, which also offers some good locations. If you wish to 'chase' a train that will run-round in Melton Loop head for Melton Junction, that leads to the Asfordby Test Track. The nearest city being Leicester, which is situated about 15-20 minutes away, depending on which route you take to it.
Railway type and traffic
Passenger trains are operated mostly by Cross Country class 170s.
Freight consists of:
  • One coal train to ketton
  • Cement run by DB Schenker and Freightliner
  • Aggregate by DB Schenker, Freightliner and GBRf
  • Occasional Engineering trains and runs to the Asfordby Test Center with trains for testing.

This link should be close to the location, but may not be the actual location so please check the page. This link will take you to what is happening 'around now'. Dates and times can be changed at the top of the page.
    Environment
An open field location, with a clear view in each direction.
    Road directions
    From Leicester:
Take the A46 road to Wanlip. From here follow signs for East Gosgate. On arrival at East Gosgate take the A607 road. Keep following this road until you come to the top of a large hill, there will be a sign for Rotherby here, take the second left turn after this sign. Go straight down to the bottom of this road until you come to a gate. Open this gate and proceed towards the railway line. Then walk up to the gate.

A radio mast has been recently errected at the crossing and, whilst not spoiling the shot, does provide a handy land mark to aim for.

    Parking
A good spot to leave your car - you can park it on the grass in the field where the crossing is situated. Its a very tranquil place.
    Public transport
Centrebus operates service 128 on behalf of Leicester CC and runs hourly between Melton Mowbray and Leicester via Frisby village. See Travelline Midlands for more details. Getting there by walking is alright, and so is biking. People arriving on a push bike can prop it up against the gate, or the fence.

    Photographic notes
For trains heading East towards Melton Mowbray, the light is good between 09:00 and 12:00 during the Summer and from 08:00 until 11:00 the rest of the year. For trains heading West towards Syston/Leicester, the light is good between 12:00 and 14:00 in the Summer and from 11:00 until 14:30 the rest of the year. You can shoot trains in both directions fairly well, there are various angles available including the option to take a shot from the large hill on the West side of the location, which is accessible by entering the field from the road just before the river bridge. This applies to videographers as well.
The crossing is an 'R&G' type (Red and Green) and has lights that warn you, by going red, when a train is approaching. There is also warbling boxes at the location. Whilst not loud these would certainly appear on video sound tracks.
