New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
The unstaffed station is located in the hamlet of Upper Padley, about 1 mile from Grindleford village, on the scenic Hope Valley line. There are a few houses near the station.
Railway type and traffic
Regular passenger services are all worked by dmus, with Trans Pennine Class 185 or 158, and Central Trains Class 170 or 158, each running hourly on weekdays. In addition, there is a two hourly (hourly on Saturdays) local service, usually worked by Class 142 or 150, with an occasional Class 156.
There is a variety of freight trains, including stone trains from Peak Forest, Tunstead & Dowlow, and cement trains from Earles Sidings.
Environment
The station is located at the western end of Totley tunnel, with wood-covered hills behind the tunnel mouth.
Road directions
Access is by a minor road off the B6521, which links the A6187/A625 (east of Hathersage) with the A623 near Eyam.

Photographic notes
The surrounding hills can cause problems with shade. The sun is best placed for eastbound trains until early afternoon. With careful selection of exposure conditions, it is possible to obtain good photographs of westbound trains coming out of the tunnel.
