New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Diss is the first station south of the Norfolk terminus Norwich, located on the GEML. Diss is on the Suffolk Norfolk border and is a thriving market town.
Railway type and traffic
Diss is unique as it only serves half hourly Intercity trains to and from Norwich and London, with no rural service as there are no branch lines to serve. The Intercity sets are formed of entirely Greater Anglia liveried class 90s with matching MkIIIb coaches and Driving Van Trailer (DVT).
There is how ever Empty Coaching stock moves to and from Norwich Crown Point which do pass Diss, which give a variety of stock which happen to be class170 Turbostars and class 156 and 153 Sprinter units, if you do get bored with class 90s. Along with the ECS moves you do get the Monday - Friday Tanks from North Walsham - Harwich which in the winter run most weekdays or in fact everyday, but is sadly less frequent in the summer, this train has load 18 bogie tanks and a First GBRf class 66/7 on the helm.
Environment
You will find yourself on the edge of a pleasant market town in rural Norfolk. If when Norwich are playing football at home and Ipswich are not it is best to avoid wearing an Ipswich football club clothing!
Road directions
From Norwich you will need to travel along the A140 untill you come to the 2nd round about after Long Straton turn right at the SECOND roundabout towards Diss, Bressingham and Thetford the road will be the A1066.
From Ipswich, you will need to take the same roundabout but turn left towards Diss, this roundabout is 900 yards after the roundabout for the A143 going to Stanton and Bury St Edmunds.
Once on the A1066 (Victoria Road when in Diss) you will need to travel along that road for around 1 and a half - 2 miles till you come to the railway bridge which is visable because its overhead, turn right onto the road adjacent to the railway line which is opposite Jewsons.
From Thetford you travel along the same road till you come to the same bridge after Morrisons and the Shell petrol station.

Parking
The station car park is located at the north end of the station and costs a massive �2.95 (August 2007) for daily parking. Your car will be safe as there is CCTV which looks over all the car park, but it is still best not to leave valuables in your car.
Public transport
By Train:
From Peterborough travel on Central Trains 'City Link' service to Norwich and change at Norwich for a Liverpool Street bound Intercity service, do not board the train back to Liverpool, trains leave Norwich bound for Diss every 30 minutes, on the hour and half past the hour.
From Liverpool Street/Colchester/Ipswich board a Intercity service bound for Norwich all will stop at Diss.

Amenities
Toilets are located on the station, there is a shop but closes at 1400 in the afternoon, so its best to walk/drive to Morrisons, to get to Morrisons turn right at the bottom of Station road and walk about half a mile and Morrisons is visible.
Accommodation
There is no recommended accommodation in Diss.

Photographic notes
The light is good all day round if there is sun, but photographers can decide where to stand when you get there, the sun can be low in the mornings and evenings, but if you are on the right side for the sun its good.
In the Afternoon its best to shoot toward Norwich on the north end of Platform 2 as you will have the sun behind you, and on the side of the train.
Station staff are kind and will assist you if you ask.
Diss is good for videographers.
